Salmon are prominent in Celtic cultural legends. An Irish legend tells of a magical Hazel Tree hanging over the Well of Wisdom, dropping its Hazelnuts into the well. Hazelnuts are eaten by the Salmon of Knowledge. He who eats the Salmon of Knowledge gains all of the Wisdom in the world. The legend tells the story of Finegas and Finn and how one eats the salmon inadvertently, gaining all of the Wisdom in the world. A Scottish legend tells how Queen of Cadzow was given a ring by her husband-to be. The Queen gave this ring to her lover, later noticed by the King. The legend goes on to tell how the ring was swallowed by a Salmon, retrieved by a monk and how the Salmon is now incorporated into Glasgow Coat of Arms.
