In Gaelic, Wales is Cymru (pronounced com-ree). The Welsh Dragon (Welsh: Y Ddraig Goch, meaning the red dragon) appears on the National Flag of Wales with a green and white background. It is believed to date back to 829 and is popularly thought to be the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders. The dragon has become a symbol for all things Welsh. Many legends surround the dragon. One such legend tells of a battling red and white dragon with the red dragon being victorious. The white dragon was thought to be the Saxons and that the red dragon the people of Welsh origin and symbolic of their resilience.
